On The Job Training (Week 8)
8th Week
This week, we focused on building web pages using WordPress. I used what I learned from watching tutorial videos to help me create the Hero Section and the header to match the official Bicol University website’s look. While WordPress is easy to use with plugins like Elementor, we still prefer coding the website from scratch because it offers more control. However, since we were only using the free version of WordPress and basic plugins, the design felt limited and the site looked simple. It didn’t feel as smooth or user-friendly, even for us.
We kept making progress by adding more pages like the "Contact Us" and "FAQs," and worked on the layout of the division pages. We also started exploring how the roles in WordPress worklike who can post or edit content. A challenge we faced was how to make articles appear automatically in the right format when written. We were told not to use Elementor for creating articles, which made things harder since using basic WordPress tools felt confusing. We hoped to find a way to create a reusable format or template for articles to help writers and editors.
Later in the week, we did some extra tasks outside of WordPress. I was tasked to create a tarpaulin design for a meeting at Hotel Lucca. At first, the design looked plain, so I asked a classmate to help fill in the empty spaces, and it turned out well. By Friday, we met with our mentor, Ma’am Llovido, to present our progress. She gave feedback and asked us to remove certain parts, like some buttons on the division pages. We also explained how each WordPress user role works admin, editor, author, and contributor showing who can create, edit, or approve posts on the site.
